The Cliffs Civil-Geotechnical Team works on large earthen embankment dam structures that encompass all facets of geotechnical engineering, instrumentation monitoring, soil mechanics, and field construction.  As a Civil Engineering Intern at Cleveland-Cliffs, the projects assigned will vary based on the intern’s education level and plant location, but will generally reflect the duties outlined below. 

 

Summary of Responsibilities:  

  • Work with an experienced Civil-Geotechnical team on key project tasks that support strategic business goals and initiatives. 

  • Lead the development of standards, processes, and procedures within the department

  • Suggest recommendations for improvement and various other duties as needed to support the business. 

  • Assist in developing operations manuals for site operations including but not limited to performing geotechnical field investigations, installing and monitoring instrumentation, civil and geotechnical design and layout, construction management, engineering & design work related to the installation of varied, complex equipment, infrastructure, and facilities.

  • Ensure that advanced day-to-day equipment troubleshooting support is provided to Maintenance

  • Manage aspects of large cross-functional projects and be aware of costs, schedule, performance, and deliverables for projects assigned  

  • Lead the development of standards, processes, and procedures within the department 

  • Various other projects as needed to support the business 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Enrollment in a Bachelor of Science program in the field of Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or other related technical degree 

  • Good written and oral communication skills

  • Adaptability to changing work environments or direction

  • Word processing and spreadsheet skills vital

  • Familiarity with concepts of general Geo-civil analyses and design

  • Strengths in GIS and Civil3D softwares a major plus

  • Completion of at least sophomore year of study by the summer of 2026
