Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) is one of North America’s premier processors, buyers, sellers, and recyclers of scrap metals of all kinds and is a key supplier to the metals industry of North America. FPT is a wholly-owned business of Cleveland-Cliffs and has an immediate opportunity for an Environmental Specialist at our FPT John Kronk operation in Detroit, MI. The Environmental Specialist will conduct environmental assessments and surveys to identify potential risks and impacts.     

Summary of Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct environmental assessments and surveys in the field to identify potential risks and impacts.
  • Conduct routine monitoring and sampling in accordance with permit requirements and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Assist yards with determining root cause and effective corrective actions related to environmental incidents and/or inspection findings.
  • Implement environmental management plans and policies.
  • Ensure compliance with local, national, and international environmental regulations and standards.
  • Monitor and analyze environmental data, such as air quality, water quality, and soil contamination.
  • Investigate and report incidents of environmental non-compliance or pollution.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, government agencies, and stakeholders on environmental initiatives.
  • Perform field testing using equipment and instrumentation.
  • Stay updated on environmental laws, regulations, and best practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, standards, and practices.
  • Industrial Storm Water Operator Certification a plus.
  • Comfortable in a manufacturing environment working with all levels in an organization.
  • Experience in conducting environmental assessments.
  • Ability to make decisions relevant to job duties on a regular basis with guidance from established policies and regulatory framework.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking abilities to address environmental challenges.
  • Collaborative; builds and works with teams.
  • Candidates must be willing to travel as needed to drive business results.
  • Valid Driver’s license in good standing.
  • Ability to follow company and site-specific safety standards.
  • Pre-Employment background, physical, and hair drug screen required.
