Job Description
Location: Cleveland, OH
Cleveland-Cliffs is seeking a hands-on Senior IT Network Engineer to design, deploy, and maintain the enterprise network, with a strong emphasis on the automation and observability solutions that keep it reliable, secure, and supportable. Reporting to the IT Network Manager and working alongside a team of experienced Network and Network Security Engineers, this senior role is automation-first — treating manual, repetitive work as a problem to be solved through code, orchestration, and intelligent tooling. The engineer brings a DevOps mindset to network operations (NetDevOps), applying version control, infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing to how the network is built, changed, and validated. Security is embedded in the work: the engineer builds visibility and automation that strengthen the organization's security posture and support rapid detection and response across corporate, mining, and steelmaking operations in a multi-site environment. As a senior member of the team, the engineer serves as a technical leader and mentor and is curious about how emerging AI-based technologies can improve network operations and security. Success in this role is measured by execution: automation delivered, visibility improved, and incidents detected and resolved quickly. This position is critical in supporting the success of Cleveland-Cliffs and provides excellent opportunity for career growth and progression.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and optimize our monitoring and observability infrastructure — including monitoring, logging, and tracing capabilities — to ensure high availability, scalability, and security
- Design and build automation to streamline deployment, configuration, monitoring, and incident response, reducing manual effort and improving consistency across the environment
- Apply DevOps practices to network operations — including version control, infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing and validation — to deliver changes faster and more reliably
- Manage network configurations and automation code in source control, with peer review, change tracking, and repeatable, auditable deployment workflows
- Build and maintain security monitoring, alerting, and telemetry that improve threat visibility, support detection and response, and feed security operations and incident response workflows
- Automate security-related tasks such as configuration compliance, firewall and access policy validation, device hardening, and patch and firmware remediation to enforce cybersecurity standards at scale
- Apply AI-based technologies and analytics to improve anomaly detection, event correlation, root cause analysis, and predictive network operations
- Serve as a hands-on technical resource for complex configuration, troubleshooting, and escalation activities in production environments
- Execute automation and observability initiatives end to end — scoping, scheduling, tracking milestones, and delivering on commitment dates
- Partner with Cyber Security and plant engineering teams on secure network operations, including visibility and segmentation between IT and operational technology (OT) environments
- Support network security operations by providing the monitoring data, automation, and integrations needed for firewall, NAC, VPN, and segmentation technologies
- Continuously research, evaluate, and recommend new automation, DevOps, observability, security, and AI-driven tools and technologies that improve the reliability, security, and supportability of the network environment
- Report project status, risks, and operational and security metrics to leadership on a regular cadence
- Support a 24x7x365 fast-paced operational environment, including participation in on-call escalation
- Travel to other Cleveland-Cliffs locations as required (approximately 10%)
- Perform other duties as assigned; responsibilities may evolve with business needs, technical developments, or operational requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Strong hands-on network engineering experience supporting enterprise network architecture in a production environment
- Hands-on experience with enterprise routing and switching, including routing protocols such as OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP, and LAN technologies such as VLANs, Spanning Tree (STP/RSTP), and EtherChannel
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification
- 5+ years of experience deploying and maintaining enterprise-scale network monitoring and observability systems
- 5+ years of experience designing and implementing network automation solutions
- Demonstrated automation mindset, with a track record of scripting, orchestration, and eliminating manual processes through code
- Working knowledge of DevOps concepts — such as version control, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code — and how they apply to network change and deployment
- Working knowledge of network security principles, including firewalls, segmentation, and access control
- Strong organizational, troubleshooting, and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and respond to escalations outside standard business hours
- Positive attitude, growth mindset, and commitment to continuous learning
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Network Engineering or a related technical discipline
- Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification or higher
- Hands-on experience applying AI-based or machine-learning technologies to operational, monitoring, or automation use cases
- Experience building CI/CD pipelines and applying NetDevOps or GitOps workflows to network change and deployment
- Hands-on experience with network security technologies such as next-generation firewalls, network access control (NAC), and IT/OT segmentation
- Experience automating security controls, compliance validation, or vulnerability and patch remediation workflows
- Experience integrating log management, alerting, and incident response tooling, including SIEM or security analytics platforms
- Experience in multi-site industrial, manufacturing, or critical infrastructure environments, including IT/OT convergence
