Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) is one of North America’s premier processors, buyers, sellers, and recyclers of scrap metals of all kinds and is a key supplier to the metals industry of North America. FPT is a wholly-owned business of Cleveland-Cliffs and has an immediate opportunity for a Cashier at our Detroit, MI location. The Cashier is responsible for taking cash or cash equivalent in payment for goods or services.

Summary of Responsibilities:  

  • Computes or re-computes bill, itemized lists, and tickets showing amount due.

  • Makes change and issues receipts or tickets to customers.

  • Records amounts received and prepare reports of transactions.

  • Reads and records totals shown on cash register tape and verify against cash on hand.

  • Quotes price and describes features of items for which money is received.

  • Issues credit memorandums and handle exchanges to customers for returned merchandise.

  • Operates cash register, compile printed list, and display the cost of customer purchase on the monitor screen.

  • General cleaning of the facilities. 

  • Marks parts purchased with guarantee, if applicable.

  • Inspects incoming and outgoing customer's toolboxes/bags.

  • Verify that their drawer is the correct amount before and after their shift.  This includes printing and retaining both a.m. and p.m. bank summaries.

  • Clean and organize the sales area. 

  • Record and process all cash drops with the proper slip. 

  • Report any cash overages and shortages + or – $2.50.  Cashiers may be held responsible for discrepancies.

  • Record and process any change left by customers to the manager/assistant manager during their closeout procedure. 

  • Maintain a neat and clean work station/office area including but not limited to mopping floors and general housekeeping duties, as assigned. 

  • Perform other cashier tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

  • Ability to write simple correspondence.

  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Basic computer skills needed.  

  • The cashier may be required to work outside gate area as needed.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  

  • Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision, Peripheral vision, Depth perception and Ability to adjust focus.

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.

  • The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.

  • Pre-Employment background, physical, and hair drug screen required.
