Job Description
Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opening for a Shift Manager Operations at our United Taconite LLC Forbes, MN Processing Plant. As a Shift Manager, you will direct and coordinate safe production at the Plant. Supervise the efforts of experienced operators and technicians to safely and efficiently perform their tasks. Lead operations crew to safely execute hot and cold side plant operations plans on a shift-by-shift basis.
Summary of Responsibilities:

Coordinate, facilitate, and motivate employees to safely and efficiently execute and complete their work assignments.

Strive to keep all employees safe and achieve this by training in safe work practices.

Complete planned inspections, safety contacts, and task observations as part of the safe production focus.

Establish high-performance standards for the employees, promote and encourage the achievement of these standards, provide feedback to employees on their progress, and implement disciplinary measures if necessary.

Update scheduling personnel on daily and weekly carry-over work.

Supervise hourly employees’ work and develop an understanding of the work being done to increase skill level and maximize operating efficiency.

Ensure employee compliance with corporate, property, and departmental policies and standard work procedures. Ensure compliance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Coordinate and facilitate departmental training needs and encourage and assist in employee development.

Analyze and evaluate the work of technicians and operators with an emphasis on producing recommendations necessary to drive continuous improvement in plant operations.

Coordinate and facilitate employee involvement in the ongoing improvement of work practices and procedures.

Communicates and implements safety and loss control standards, company safety rules, and MSHA regulations. Understands and communicates environmental policies and procedures.

Resolve employee problems through effective communication.

Communicate with the Mine dispatch operator as it relates to the delivery of ore to the Plant to prevent disruptions in either the Mine or Plant. When issues arise and disruption is evident, take the immediate corrective actions required and provide information to the senior supervisor identifying the issue and the corrective action taken. If corrective actions cannot be immediately addressed, elevate the issue through the action card process whereby it can be reported on in the level two meeting and the SM can make the task assignment to address the action card.

Supervise and direct operating crews and hold them accountable to safely meet performance expectations and standard work. Where there is variation to the standard work being performed between crews or individuals take the necessary action to educate to standards. In the event the standard needs to be modified by identifying improvements to the standard, document the recommended change to the standard and bringing the improvement opportunity to the senior supervisor for review.

Implement and sustain current best practices related to maximizing production to minimize variation across crews. Where variation is present, review the standards with the individuals and monitor the standard which will minimize variation.

Monitor Plant performance during the shift to ensure the process operates within the operating parameters and address variation to minimize process disruptions. In the event, the process falls outside of the operating parameters, take corrective actions. If unable to return the process to within the parameters, elevate the issue to the senior supervisor, identify the current issue, and what actions were tried (or not) to attempt to bring the process back into the operating parameters.

When equipment deficiencies create an immediate disruption to the process, take immediate corrective action utilizing the proper crafts available. If the deficiency is not creating an immediate operating disruption, enter quality work orders into the system as defined by the standard. At a minimum, the work order identifies the equipment, contains a brief explanation of the issue, the physical location of the deficiency, includes the originator's priority, and as much additional information that can be attained to assist the Maintenance Department.

Monitor and maintain environmental compliance in the Plant and take the proper actions when required such as dust collection, spill reporting, and fugitive dust. While on shift, the operations supervisor is the single point of accountability for environmental compliance. Understand the department’s environmental compliance requirements and work directly with the Environmental Department for direction, responsibilities, and accountabilities that support environmental compliance.

Minimum Qualifications:

2-year degree in technical field or equivalent.

3-5 years’ recent experience at a mining/mineral processing facility or heavy industry, preferably in a unionized environment.

Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills such as team building and conflict resolution are required. Willingness to promote team concepts and company policies. Ability to motivate, delegate, establish, and work in a collaborative environment.
Must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays, to ensure 24-hour coverage, 7 days per week. Regular attendance is an essential requirement. Must be able to physically perform all these responsibilities safely: walk on uneven surfaces, climb equipment, operate pickup, and other small fleet vehicles, etc.
Relocation assistance may be considered for highly qualified candidates from outside the local area.
The salary range for this role is $56,000 to $135,000. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be based on numerous factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location and business or organizational needs.
