Job Description
Cleveland-Cliffs is seeking a Quality Engineer for our New Carlisle Works facility. As a Quality Engineer, you will be responsible for guiding team members to resolve moderately complex team issues while also serving as an effective liaison between team members, union team representatives, and management on matters involving compliance with quality systems, safety guidelines and procedures, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement. From a technical perspective, the Quality Engineer provides direction regarding quality issues, trial runs, customer specifications, and cost management. A successful Quality Engineer must have a strong technical background (engineering, craft, or operating experience) and a solid customer knowledge base, which will ensure that the production unit produces a quality product that satisfies the needs of the customer.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Follows and promotes safety policies.
- Maintains extensive knowledge of customer quality standards and surface defects – both upstream and internally generated.
- Attends daily meetings and provides updates on current quality issues.
- Recognize process variances, their source, and how to control the variances.
- Troubleshoot quality issues and drives improvement initiatives.
- Coaches inspectors to enhance defect detection and problem-solving.
- Ensure accuracy of the rejection database to ensure correct Unified Defect Code (UDC’s) are used and proper source cause is assigned.
- Serves on committees and cross-functional teams when necessary.
- Demonstrates strong organizational and decision-making skills under pressure.
- Investigate and adapt to evolving customer quality requirements and inquiries by communicating with customer staff, technical service staff, sales, etc.
- Reviews new parts for production compatibility.
- Work with facility loading to optimize production flow.
- Utilizes Order Fulfillment & Containment System (OFS) and web disposition systems for coil, order, and Customer Quality Requirements (CQR) information.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least one (1) year of steel manufacturing quality experience.
- Bachelor's Degree (B.S.) in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science.
- Working Knowledge of Microsoft Office/Excel.
- Exhibit strong organization/record retention skills and strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5 years’ experience in the technical field relating to steel processing.
