Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) is one of North America’s premier processors, buyers, sellers, and recyclers of scrap metals of all kinds and is a key supplier to the metals industry of North America. FPT is a wholly-owned business of Cleveland-Cliffs and has an immediate opportunity for a Quality Technician on 1st shift at the Pontiac, MI location. The Quality Technician is part of the quality team responsible for ensuring quality of materials and blends. 

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Ensure adherence to safety standards including use of required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Work closely with operations to determine efficient use, storage, processing, and distribution of scrap materials
  • Evaluate incoming steel product to determine utilization for low copper blends
  • Coordinate testing with the melt shop, validates quality of blends, and recommends adjustments to the yard(s) as needed
  • Provide guidance or training to yard employees to ensure understanding and successful implementation of any procedure changes
  • Assist operations in the management of quality programs and data
  • Oversee incoming materials at various yards and select samples for quality evaluation
  • Responsible for providing quality data from material suppliers
  • Regularly work with operations management to develop new material blends
  • Verify chemistry of material using spectrometer
  • Operate fork truck as needed
  • Uphold compliance to environmental, safety, state and local requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED and must be at least 18 years of age
  • 5+ years experience in a metal processing, manufacturing, or industrial environment
  • Experience in scrap industry preferred
  • Knowledge of metallurgy
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to calculate percentages, density, size, volume etc. by applying basic concepts of algebra and geometry
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient data entry skills
  • Ability to establish priorities and manage multiple tasks at once
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to follow oral and written communication
  • Ability to climb ladders or steps to reach objects
  • Work cooperatively with other employees
  • Must be able to work in an environment where routinely exposed to dust, dirt, vibrations, extreme climate and changes in weather
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Pre-Employment background, physical, and hair drug screen required
