Shift Manager – Mechanical Maintenance, Hot Mill 

Cleveland-Cliffs Cleveland Works has an immediate opening for a Shift Manager – Mechanical Maintenance in our Hot Mill Division. The following primary position responsibilities and key position requirements are intended to provide an overview of the position, but are not all-inclusive.

Job Description:  

  • Responsible for the safety, environmental tracking and compliance of the mechanical maintenance employees, and the process, in assigned areas.  This includes participation in audits, area safety inspections, crew training, and accident investigations.
  • Responsible for ensuring product quality through the mill by analysis of data from assigned areas.
  • Responsible for performance management of skilled craft workers.
  • Directly supervise the people and equipment needed to maintain the mechanical assets of the hot rolling mill in assigned areas.
  • Work with the maintenance manager, operating manager, process manager, process engineer, operating technology, planning, maintenance, contractors and operating personnel to reduce delays, costs, and improve mechanical reliability in assigned areas of the mill.
  • Provide development and training of the assigned area’s maintenance crews.                                                                                                                       As a supervisor, provide consultative input into scheduling and disciplinary actions.
  • Accountable for work executed by assigned skilled craft workers and other resources.
  • Attend daily/weekly and shutdown scheduling meetings as required.                                                                                                                               Lead tool box safety talks during work assignment addressing all job hazards. 
  • Assure all ‘job safe’ requirements are in place prior to beginning execution (permits, isolations and lockouts, etc).
  • Verify and perform lock-out audits.                                                      
  • Verify all assigned work efforts are complete.
  • Provide input into planning.
  • Provide input into work identification.

Minimum Requirements:  

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent from an accredited school 
  • At least 3 years supervisory experience in heavy industry or the military, working with skilled craft workers in a union environment.  
  • Strong mechanical maintenance aptitude, strong leadership/team skills. 
  • Computer skills including Word, Excel, Power Point and exposure to data bases.  
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn other site specific computer applications.  

Preferred Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree (Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology)
  • Hot mill or other rolling mill experience is preferred.  
  • Exposure to a computer based PM program and/or to an equipment reliability program.
